We all know that there are many health benefits of tea, but did you know that many types of tea, especially Green Tea, are good for the skin?

In skincare, Green Tea holds so many remarkable benefits. Green Tea is a powerhouse antioxidant which has been shown to significantly halt the glycation process as they promote collagen synthesis. What is glycation? Simply put, it is the process of sugar proteins damaging the collagen and elastin in the skin. Choosing skin care products formulated with Green Tea can help fight glycation and minimize the signs of skin aging caused by dietary indiscretions such as excess sugar consumption.

The EGCG in Green Tea also helps protect against free radicals. Free radicals not only impact your health, but they negatively impact your skin. UV damage, smoke and other pollutants can wreak havoc on your skin, accelerating the aging process and damaging cells. This damage causes collagen and elastin to break down, making you look older, as we just mentioned with the glycation process.

When you apply skin care treatments with antioxidants, you may be shielding your skin from harm. There are actually several published, peer-reviewed studies about tea and the skin. One that stands out to me is the one published in the American Association for Cancer Research, which talks about tea’s ability to help prevent UVB damage.  Look for skin care products with green tea on the ingredients label. Even better, you can make your own.

DIY BEAUTY PROJECT

Did you know that Earl Grey tea is also beneficial to the skin? Earl Grey offers anti-bacterial properties. This teacontains pure Italian bergamot oil, which not only has a lively citrus aroma, but may help improve the appearance of your skin. Not only can Bergamot Oil help your skin look more radiant, but it contains antiseptic properties. This makes Bergamot a wise choice to help care for acne, psoriasis and other troubled skin conditions.

Since both green tea and Earl Grey are skin benefiting, our Earl Grey Green (which uses certified organic green tea) is the ideal choice for our DIY project.

Today, I’m sharing a simple Earl Grey Green Tea Facial Toner recipe. Toners are spritzed on the skin or applied with a cotton ball and help remove any traces of makeup left behind after cleansing. A well-formulated toner can also restore the skin’s pH.
DIY Earl Grey Green Tea Toner

  • Chilled Tealightful Organic Earl Grey Green Tea (one cup of brewed tea)
  • A drop or two of vitamin E oil (optional)
  • One crushed-up 500mg vitamin C with rosehips tablet
  • Combine the above ingredients.
  • Shake really well. I store this in an amber or cobalt spray bottle and spritz on.
  • Keep refrigerated and discard after 1 week.

Winter, Warmth and Tea

The impending snow here in Rochester NY is making me dream about spring and brighter days. I have always resisted this time of year. As soon as the first snow flies, I start counting the days until the first official day of spring. Spring is a joyful time of year. I love watching the first crocuses and daffodils peak out from the mulch in our front yard. The best part is watching our tree lined street bloom into a gorgeous green halo.

During my practice of meditation and mindfulness, I’ve learned that the downside of resisting the here and now, is it that we miss the here and now.

Instead of wishing for spring or an island vacation, I’ve started practicing a new tea ritual for wellness. This ritual has made winter feel a bit more charming, cozy and colorful. It has also given me a new sense of winter joy I have never felt before. I hope it does the same for you!

Tea & Warmth
Tea Tip: At the end of a long work week, take a tea bath, light a candle and sip a cup of Tumeric Tulsi to soothe tired muscles and joints.

Turmeric Tulsi

Light a Candle
Light a candle and run the water for a tea bath! During the bath, sip your tea. Breath slowly and deeply. Use this time for silence, meditation and introspection. When anxious thoughts creep into your mind, focus on your breath and continue to sip your tea.

DIY Bath Tea Sachet
In the early days of Tealightful we had a gorgeous line of bath tea. We were a bit ahead of our time, DIY bath tea recipes are currently all the rage. Enjoy our simple recipe and DO try this at home.

Peace Potion

Lavender Peace Potion Bath Tea 
Ingredients:
2 cups Lavender Epsom Salt
1/2 cup Tealightful Peace Potion (Made with three certified organic herbs: Peppermint, Raspberry Leaf and Chamomile)

Directions:
Mix Epsom salt with dry tea. Fill extra large tea filter with 1/2 cup of bath tea. Tuck the flap so the tea does not leak or tie it with a small rubber band. Soak the tea filter in your bath. Inhale the beautiful herbal aroma while you sip Turmeric Tulsi or any Tealightful herbal tea.

Warming rituals have a unique perspective in the winter. It’s a time when sipping hot tea, in a hot bath by candle light might just be what the doctor ordered. I hope that you will take time to embrace tea, embrace warmth and find your own winter joy!

Stress Less with Adaptogens

Carol King’s Beautiful is playing in the background as I write this, and I can’t help but think that there is a lot of truth in the lyrics that you’re as beautiful as you feel.

When you feel good it shows in your smile, in your eyes and in everything you do. We all hope for days like these and we can have more. Modern research has shown that adaptogen infused tea can help to balance stress hormones, and improve our day to day happiness.

For thousands of years adaptogenic herbs have been used in Ayurveda and Chinese herbal medicine. Adaptogens have been scientifically proven to help your body adapt to stress.

What are they and how do they work?
Plant-based adaptogens are a unique group of herbs and mushrooms that are used to support the health of your hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA Axis). What is Flight or Fight?

The HPA Axis shows Mechanism of stress and stress response: The hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is an endocrine cascade that mediates several aspects of physiological stress, including responses to acute stressors (i.e., fight-or-flight response) but it also causes chronic stress.

Health Benefits of Green Tea

1. Green Tea contains an abundance of antioxidants.

Think of the term “antioxidant” as a shield against harmful flying objects. In reality, these “flying objects” are free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that cause tissue damage and aging. These could be things such as cigarette smoke, radiation, UV rays, pesticides, various drugs, smog, and other forms of environmental pollution.

Picture these harmful microscopic contaminants swirling around you. Antioxidants will help shield you from harm, essentially. Think of them as superheroes! They are special molecules that can help stop those free radicals — they are able to neutralize their effects.

2. Green Tea can help you feel relaxed.

Green tea contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which was discovered in green tea back in the late 1940’s. L-theanine is believed to help enhance brain chemistry and may help reduce the symptoms of anxiety. In fact, there have been many scientific studies on this amino acid, which has been shown to possibly help reduce stress, help with sleep disturbances, and promote a sense of rejuvenation and calm.

3. Green Tea may boost your metabolism.

Multiple scientific studies suggest that green tea may increase fat burning as a metabolism booster. This is because of a catechin called EGCG that is present in green tea. EGCG may help increase the calorie burn rate in the body, although studies are not yet 100% proven.

4. Green Tea may help you concentrate a bit better.

The caffeine in green tea is believed to have a positive cognitive effect. Multiple studies show that everything from mood to memory and reaction time can be improved by caffeine. We mentioned L-theanine earlier. That also has an impact on the brain. L-theanine is believed to work in synergy with caffeine to increase alpha waves and dopamine in the brain. Study subjects have reported improved concentration and productivity after consuming green tea.

5. Green tea is so easy to cold brew in the refrigerator!
Try this easy recipe with any white, green, or oolong tea! In our humble opinion, cold-brewing works best with teas that are lightly oxidized!

Cold-Brew Tropicana Banana

TROPICANA BANANA COLD BREW

Three Easy Steps!
1. TEA – Put 2-3 tablespoons of Tropicana Banana Green tea into a large paper tea filter (or into our 48oz. Cold Brew Iced Tea Maker!)

2. WATER – Fill a pitcher (or our cold brew iced tea maker) with 48oz. of fresh clean cold filtered water! TIP: The better the water, the better your tea!

3. REFRIGERATE – Put your pitcher or cold brew tea maker in the refrigerator for 4-8 hours.

Once the tea is done cold-brewing, remove your paper tea filter or strainer (if using the cold brew tea maker). Serve over ice and enjoy!

Recipe Variation: Banana Lime Cold Brew Tea with Chocolate Mint!
Add fresh lime slices and chocolate mint leaves to the cold-brew mixture or any fresh fruit that appeals to you.

Apple Ginger Oat Scone Bites

Scone bites make life so much easier!  They are perfect for popping into your lunch bag, they make a quick energizing breakfast and they are a petite treat to enjoy with a cup of tea.  You won’t feel guilty about eating them or sharing them with your family.  They are full of wholesome ingredients.  This recipe starts with our all natural Scottish Oat scone mix.  We love this mix because it is so versatile.

Ingredients:
1 Tealightful Scottish Oat Scone Mix
1/2 stick of butter
1/2 cup finely diced apple
1 small ripe mashed banana (the more ripe the better).
3 tablespoons organic Ginger Syrup (Maple syrup can be used).
1 tablespoon chopped crystallized ginger (optional)
1 cup naturally sweetened vanilla or apple cinnamon yogurt
Note: applesauce can be used in place of yogurt if desired.

 Streusel Topping:
1/2 cup quick oats
1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Ingredients
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In a medium bowl melt butter.  Add yogurt, diced apple, banana, ginger syrup,
and crystallized ginger (if using).  Add scone mix.

Scone bites can be made one of two ways!
Method One:
Gently stir until you can form a ball with your hands.  Pat into an oval.  Mix
ingredients for streusal topping.   Pat topping onto scones.  Cut into 36 pieces.

Method Two: 
Scoop the dough from the bowl with a small cookie scoop.  Then roll each piece
into the streusel topping.  This method yields 72 scone bites.

Put individual pieces onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 11 minutes.  Let cool and enjoy!  Scones are best consumed the same day
or you can freeze them.  Microwave frozen scone bites for 20 seconds.
